The Modesto Fire Department responded to a fire at a pallet yard on Janopaul Lane in Modesto, CA on August 9, 2024. The fire escalated to the equivalent of four alarms. At the same time, another large vegetation fire occurred in West Modesto, requiring multiple resources.

The Janopaul fire destroyed approximately 200,000 wooden pallets, multiple tractor trailers, power poles, transformers, a recreational vehicle, and a residential unit on the property. The fire spread to nearby warehouses and vegetation due to wind-carried embers. Initial damage estimates exceed $1,200,000.

Firefighting efforts faced challenges due to the intensity of the flames and limited access. One firefighter suffered a heat-related injury but was treated and released from the hospital shortly after. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

In response, 18 engines, 5 trucks, 7 chiefs, and various resources were deployed, along with personnel from multiple fire departments. Assistance came from Turlock Fire Department, Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District, Ripon Fire District, Patterson Fire Department, and a strike team from San Joaquin County. Other agencies providing support included the California Highway Patrol, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department, Modesto Police Department, and various other organizations.
