At the Modesto City Schools Board of Education meeting on August 19, fifth grader Katherine and sixth grader Sarahi were recognized as the first student pledgers of the year. Katherine, a recess buddy and student leader at Burbank Elementary, enjoys arts and crafts and plays in the band. She arrived at Burbank in second grade with limited English but has worked hard and is now English proficient. Katherine aims to attend college and become a teacher.

Sarahi, also from Burbank Elementary, is an outstanding student who is helpful, a role model to peers, and enjoys reading fiction books and crocheting. She too was reclassified as English proficient after putting in hard work and excels in academics. Sarahi's post-high school goal is to go to college and become a science teacher to further her interest in water, plants, and animals.

Both students received Certificates of Appreciation from Modesto City Schools for their dedication and achievements.
