The Modesto Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire on I Street early this morning after reports of a large amount of smoke in the area. Upon arrival, firefighters found a one-story boarded-up commercial building with fire inside. The incident was escalated to a third alarm, bringing in a total of ten engines, three trucks, three battalion chiefs, and one paramedic fire captain from Modesto, Stanislaus Consolidated, and Turlock Fire Departments. Crews were faced with a significant amount of fire in the main building, which posed a threat to the neighboring business. Fortunately, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the original building, minimizing damage to the adjacent property. Firefighters remained on the scene for about four hours for overhaul. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit.
