Historic Brooks Building Reimagined in Scranton

The Brooks Building, located at 436 Spruce Street in Scranton, Pennsylvania, is an example of Romanesque Revival architecture completed in 1896. Originally known as the Commonwealth Building, it was designed in 1891 by New York City architect Lansing Holden for Judge Alfred Hand. The design features a distinctive bay window, which Holden used to comply with a city law regarding the setback from the sidewalk.

The building's name likely originates from one of its long-term tenants, the J. H. Brooks brokerage firm, while Peoples National Bank occupied the space from 1906 to 1917. In 1919, the Brooks Realty Company purchased the building and renamed it the Brooks Building.

A major renovation in the 1980s converted the structure into a mixed-use facility, housing retail spaces, offices, and residential units. In June 2009, New Jersey real estate investor Frank Perretti purchased the building, and in 2011 he added 15 apartments, increasing the total number of residential units to 27.
