**Sarasota County Officials Warn Beachgoers About Dangerous Rip Currents**
Sarasota County Emergency Services is urging residents and visitors to stay vigilant about the dangers of rip currents when visiting local beaches. These powerful currents of water move away from the shore and can pull even the strongest swimmers out to sea.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), rip currents are responsible for more than 80% of rescues performed by lifeguards on surf beaches. In Sarasota County, awareness campaigns stress the importance of caution, offering the reminder to “Break the Grip of the Rip!”
Officials recommend swimming near a lifeguard and avoiding the ocean if uncertain about swimming conditions. If caught in a rip current, experts advise swimming parallel to the shore or toward breaking waves at an angle to escape. Should you find yourself unable to reach safety, lifeguards encourage drawing attention by yelling and waving for assistance.

Remember, safety is paramount: when in doubt, don’t go out.
