**Dogs Trained to Sniff Out Invasive Spotted Lanternfly Egg Masses**
ITHACA, NY — A new approach is helping growers and conservationists combat the spread of invasive spotted lanternflies: specially trained detection dogs. According to a report from Cornell University, these dogs are now being used to locate egg masses of the insect, which overwinter in areas such as vineyards and forests.
Angela Fuller, a professor in Cornell’s Department of Natural Resources and the Environment in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, explained the advantage of this method. “In a very complex environment, it’s easier for a dog to smell something than it is for a human to see something that is small and cryptic,” Fuller stated.
The initiative aims to detect the egg masses early, enabling timely action to limit the spread of the invasive species. Spotted lanternflies are known for their detrimental effects on agriculture and native ecosystems, and this innovative detection strategy could play a crucial role in protecting affected regions.
