The Modesto Police Department will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on April 19, 2024, from 6:30 PM to 1:30 AM at an undisclosed location. The checkpoint is aimed at promoting public safety by identifying and removing impaired drivers from the road. The location for the checkpoint is chosen based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes.

Sergeant Robert Hall emphasized the risks posed by impaired drivers and highlighted the importance of measures to reduce their presence on the roads. It was noted that impaired driving can result from substances other than alcohol, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana. Driving under the influence of marijuana, despite its legal status, remains illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI can face fines and penalties averaging $13,500, along with a suspended license. The funding for this DUI checkpoint program was provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
