The Modesto Police Department will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on May 3, 2024, from 6:30 PM to 1:30 AM at a location that has not been disclosed. The decision on where to set up the checkpoint is based on data that shows incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The main goal of these checkpoints is to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the roads.

Sergeant Robert Hall emphasized the risk that impaired drivers pose to others on the road and stated that any measures taken to reduce the number of impaired drivers will greatly improve traffic safety. It is important to note that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol; prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and marijuana can also impair driving ability.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI offense can expect to face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license. The funding for this DUI checkpoint program comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
